What the job involves

A typical job starts with removing old, cracked or rotten fascia and soffit boards, checking the rafter feet behind them for any water damage, and fitting new uPVC boards with correct ventilation gaps so roof timbers can breathe and condensation doesn't build up in the loft space.

Guttering work involves setting new brackets to the correct fall so water runs freely to the downpipes, fitting union joints and stop ends properly sealed, and connecting downpipes securely to the drainage below. We also fit or replace gutter outlets and hopper heads where needed.

Repair visits usually involve unblocking gutters clogged with moss, leaves or nesting debris, re-setting sagging sections that have lost their fall, and replacing cracked lengths or joints that have started leaking down the wall face.

Materials and standards we use

We fit uPVC fascia and soffit boards as standard, since they resist rot and salt corrosion far better than timber and need minimal maintenance once installed. On period and registered properties we can match existing profiles or advise on retaining and repairing original timber or cast iron where that's the more appropriate approach.

Guttering is fitted with correctly sized brackets and falls, sealed joints and secure downpipe connections, and where guttering work adjoins the roof covering itself, the surrounding slate or tile detailing is finished to BS 5534 so water is shed correctly into the system rather than behind it.

The cost of fascia, soffit and guttering work depends on the length of roofline being replaced and how many corners, outlets and downpipes are involved, since each junction adds fitting time. Access and scaffolding matter here too, particularly on two-storey properties or terraces with limited working space.

Timber condition found once old fascia boards are removed can affect price, as can the choice between standard uPVC and a heritage-matched profile for a period property. Freight costs for specific colours or profiles ordered to the island can also factor in, and registered buildings occasionally have specific requirements around visible roofline materials.
