What the job involves

Every repair starts with finding the actual source of the problem, which isn't always where the leak shows up inside the property. Water can travel along rafters or felt before dripping through a ceiling some distance from the original fault, so we trace it back to the roof itself rather than just patching the visible symptom.

Once we've identified the cause, whether that's a slipped or cracked slate, a failed lead flashing, a split in a flat roof membrane or storm damage to ridge tiles, we carry out the repair using materials that match the existing roof as closely as possible. Where a temporary cover is needed to prevent further water ingress before the full repair can be completed, we'll fit one on the same visit.

For more significant storm damage affecting a larger area of the roof, we assess whether a targeted repair is sufficient or whether the wider roof covering has reached a point where more extensive work should be considered, and we're upfront with you either way.

The repair jobs we're called to most often fall into a fairly consistent set of categories.

Materials and standards we use

Repairs are carried out using materials matched to the existing roof wherever possible, whether that's natural Spanish or Welsh slate, cement fibre slate, clay pantiles or plain tiles, code 4 or 5 milled lead for flashing repairs following Lead Sheet Association guidance, or single-ply and GRP patches on flat roofs.

All repair work is completed to BS 5534 for the fixing and lapping of slates and tiles, and we take the same care over a small repair as we would a full re-roof, since a poorly fixed patch tends to fail again quickly, particularly in Jersey's exposed coastal conditions.

Repair costs vary with the extent of the damage and how accessible the affected area is. A single slipped slate on a low-pitched roof near ground level is a quick job, while storm damage spread across a large or steeply pitched roof, or a repair needing scaffolding rather than a ladder, takes longer and costs more.

Sometimes what looks like a single fault turns out to involve wider nail sickness or perished underlay nearby, which we'll flag before carrying out work beyond the original call-out. Material availability and any freight lead time for specific slate or tile matches can factor in too, particularly for older or registered properties.
